 On
April 22, 1999 (Fiji time), after 43 days of seclusion (starting
on March 10) at Atma Nadi Shakti Loka (The "Brightness", Adi Da's
Mahasamadhi Site on Adi Da Samrajashram), Adi Da passed through
an Event of Yogic Death, which enabled Him to establish the Perpetual Radiation
of His World-Blessing of all-and-All from Adi Da Samrajashram.
Avatar Adi Da arrived at Naitauba in the evening of March 7, 1999.
He stood on the deck of the Turaga Dau Loloma (the Hermitage boat),
dressed in orange, His Staff in hand, waiting to disembark. There
was a feeling of profound vulnerability in Him, of stillness and
transparency. And there was a fragility and exhaustion.[1]
On March 10, Avatar Adi Da told Ruchiradama Nadikanta
that He was suffering severe symptoms of heart stress. He passionately
urged her to feel and communicate the gravity of His physical state
and the threatening situation in the world (including the war in
Kosovo at the time). Minutes later, Avatar Adi Da called for a car,
put on orange sannyasin attire, and asked to be driven to The "Brightness",
the temple that He had (at the time) designated as His Mahasamadhi
Site (the burial site of a Spiritual Master).
Avatar Adi Da was so fiercely involved in His Spiritual
Work during this time that He would often not allow His devotees
to do even basic services for Him. He Himself would pull the cart
that contained His food up the hill, lift the food bins, serve His
own meals, and clean His room. Much of the time, He was listening to the world news on a shortwave radio and also receiving printed news reports every few hours.
The devotees attending Adi Da during that time describe what it was like being near The "Brightness":

One night, it was physically as if the war were occurring
at The "Brightness". I was sleeping at some distance
from The "Brightness" Temple, and it was like being
on the front line of a battlefield. A few times, I had to
go up to the field of The "Brightness" to serve
Beloved Adi Da, and the thunder was so loud it shook my body
like a barrage of artillery fire. And the lightning was so
bright, just blasting across the sky — the whole field lit
up, as if from explosives. During the night, the winds were
so strong it felt as though the tent was going to be lifted
right off the ground. The agitation in the atmosphere altogether
was extreme. It felt like the war was occurring right in Beloved
Adi Da's Domain. Between 4:30 and 4:45 A.M. on April 2, a
terrific bolt of lightning struck, immediately followed by
a vast thunderous cracking noise, as if the sky were splitting.
The ground shook. The entire dome of sky over The "Brightness"
was lit, for a few seconds, by the blinding light.

I was about halfway down the path in the middle of The "Brightness"
field, when the most intense moment of the entire storm occurred.
The lightning ran around the sky in a circle. And the circle
of lightning established a dome over The "Brightness".
It was unbelievable. There was a loud crackling electrical
sound all around the "Brightness" — and I was in
the center, feeling the electrical force and intensity of
the light dome. Then, as I relaxed and felt beyond my fear,
there was a stillness, and I was able to receive Beloved Adi
Da's Transcendental Spirit-Blessing Descending from above
into the body.

By mid-April, Avatar Adi Da was rarely leaving His
room except to cross the field to His bathhouse. Adi Da described
this time as a period of intense Penance for the sake of the world.
During this period, He was entirely focused on Spiritually Blessing
the world. During this time, a dense cloud-pall hung almost constantly over the island of Naitauba. Day after day during those months, lightning blasted
the sky and thunder shook the island like cracks and volleys of
rocket fire. The storms were supernatural in their elemental force
and intense, oppressive energy-field. To live on Naitauba at that
time was to live in a cosmic battlefield. Avatar Adi Da Samraj was
Working with negative forces greater than this world. He was engaged
in a Divine Yoga of transforming these forces above and beyond His
Body.
Ruchiradama Nadikanta describes Avatar Adi Da's Spiritual
Ordeal at this point (when synchronously, in the Kosovo war, some 650 air strikes
were hitting Serbian targets each day):

After dinner, Beloved Adi Da would sometimes permit me to
anoint His skin rashes and to rub healing ointment into His
Feet for ten minutes, if that. His Body felt battered and
bruised, and at the same time completely Translucent to His
Divine Siddhi,
which He was Pulling down into this plane with such Forceful
Intention that He was barely even aware of His Body. I could
feel that it was painful for Him to be touched, even in that
simple manner. Any drawing of His attention into the physical
was painful, because He was taking into His own Body the pain
and suffering of all those who are dying and being tormented
in Eastern Europe and all over the world. His tapas
was so extreme that attention in the physical dimension was
excruciating for Him.
There was one night, April 17, when Beloved Adi Da did come
down from The "Brightness" Temple to sleep in the
tent that had been prepared for Him, and He permitted me to
sleep there also. During the night, horrifying visions of
war arose in me, and Beloved Adi Da, while outwardly seeming
to be asleep, was speaking in what sounded to me like Slavic
tongues. His Body was rigid with the intensity of the Work
He was doing. The next morning, He said that He felt no response
to His Influence at any level, in any dimension. There was
only resistance.

Events in the world at the time were synchronous with the ordeal
Adi Da was going through. Indeed, on the day when His ordeal reached
its peak — April 22, 1999 — the heaviest day of bombing of the entire
Kosovo War occurred, and the shooting massacre at Columbine High
School took place. Adi Da explained that the field of supernormal
energy-phenomena occurring around Him during this period was not
just about these events, but about all kinds of threats that could
affect the future of humankind.

Up to that time, Adi Da had been concentrated in instructing
His devotees, and now He was immersing Himself completely
in a world-Work for the sake of the "root"-transformation
of humanity and the human future. His outward Regard was on
all the details of the news of the Kosovo war, but, at the
same time, He was reading many indicators — both visible and
invisible — of the catastrophes that could come upon humanity
with the turn of the twenty-first century.

The seed essays of Adi Da's address to "the entire human family",
Not-Two Is Peace,
were written during this period. Also during this time, in response
to the desperate situation of so many human beings around the world,
Adi Da created a "Universal World-Prayer" as a free offering
to everyone. He specifically wrote the prayer in non-sectarian language,
so that people of all religious traditions (as well as people who
were not affiliated with any religious tradition) can join together
in making this prayer. The prayer is simultaneously a call for Divine
Help and Blessing, and a heartfelt affirmation of our intention
(as human beings) to live and act in such a way that the course
of human history can be transformed.

Beloved, Inmost Heart of every heart,
do not Let our human hearts be broken
by our merely mortal suffering here —
but Make our mortal human hearts break-Free
to an unconditional love of You,
that we may, Thus, love all living beings
with Love's own True, and Truly broken, Heart.

Adi Da would later describe the supernormal signs that had accompanied
His forty-three day seclusion in the "Brightness". He
said that the real battleground was in His Body, which was gripped
in a monumental struggle with dark forces that were not local, not
even of Earth merely, but of cosmic proportions. Throughout this
time, Adi Da had to do everything possible to keep the dark invasion
from coming down into the Body, because the physical Body had no
defenses. The head was wide open, without the armoring and locks
on the brain that characterize an ordinary person. The thunder and
lightning were literally the effects of His Work above the Body,
to "Brighten" an otherwise impending evil. But, as the
days passed, without any relief in terms of positive signs in the
world, His Body began to weaken, and came to the point where He
could no longer keep the battle above His head. Then the darkness
started to come down into His Body and began to "fry"
the nervous system.
A reversal of His Yoga of Descent, completed
in 1986, was starting to occur. And this, as He explained, was
inevitable and necessary. He had identified "to the toes" with the
human plight, but now He was concentrated in another process — His
Work of Spiritually Blessing all beings — in this gross world, and
all the subtle planes of existence. Because of the intensity of
the forces to be confronted in the course of this Divine Work, Avatar
Adi Da Samraj could not allow these forces to come down into His
bodily Vehicle. His human body could not accommodate, or survive,
such an intrusion. And so a Yogic re-structuring was occurring in
Him. More and more, His Energy and Awareness were Up, rather than
Down.
Shortly after leaving The "Brightness" on April 22,
Adi Da's physical symptoms eased.
Here are Adi Da's Own Words about that time:

During that period of time, I was minimally associated with
the Body — because the Force of My Transcendental Spiritual
Work was "Located" almost entirely Above
the Body. As a result, there was (throughout that period of
forty-three days) a tremendous Force of Pressure in the Head
— and that pressure was synchronous with constant external
signs of rainstorms, thunder, lightning, and heat-lightning
in the environment.
Throughout My time of Seclusion at The "Brightness"
(and ever since that time), I had to Struggle in order to
remain associated with the Body. I was required to Work persistently,
and with enormous intensity, to Bring the natural life-energy
and My Own Divine Spiritual Energy Down into the Body. However, on April 21, 1999,
all of That Work suddenly reversed. A syndrome of overly "yin", overly cold suppression
(of the natural life-energy and of My Own Divine Spiritual Energy) took over the Body,
indicating that that particular period of My Struggle with the "dark" forces of
the world had come to an end.
Through the evening of April 21, and continuing into the early morning hours of April 22,
a spontaneous process began to develop (and powerful symptoms began to appear) in the Body. . .
That process "fried" the life-seat of the kidneys and the adrenals, and then "fried" the lower
Body (altogether), and finally "fried" the entire Body. All of the systems in the Body began
to break down — and, indeed, the entire Body itself began to break down — to such an extent
that I nearly lost My Association with physically Incarnate existence altogether.
That entire . . . syndrome can be characterized as My being "thrown out" of the Body (and
up into the Divine "Bright" Spherical Self-Domain of Eternal Light) by the force of resistance
to Me that was being manifested in the gathering of My devotees and in the "world" altogether. . .
My departure from The "Brightness" on April 22 was a profound turning point in My Struggle.
I had done everything necessary and possible to Do. And, from that time, I am (now, and forever
hereafter) simply Waiting to see whether people choose to respond to Me.
At The "Brightness", I was "fried" to death and "spat out" — Such That I could Do My "world"-Work
of Merely Standing (here) to Bless.

This event had a profound significance in the context of Adi Da's
entire Life and Work.
|
My Divine Avataric Self-"Emergence" began an Ordeal
of many years — and That Ordeal fundamentally came to an end
in 1999 at Atma Nadi Shakti Loka (The "Brightness"),
My Most Set-Apart Domain within My Great Island-Hermitage
of Adi Da Samrajashram.
The "Brightness" Time was a Winding-Down of the
entire Process — as it had Been until then — of My Divine
Avataric Life and Work.
