Unimagined Success
Roger Briggs
Roger Briggs is the founder and CEO
of Naptech, a company specializing in refurbishing electronic testing
equipment for resale. Starting on his own, Naptech is now one of
the major companies in this field. Even from the beginning, Roger
has always given generously for the support of Adi Da, Adidam, and
renunciate devotees. He has always been an inspiration to other
devotees in this regard. He has become one of Adi Da Samraj's patrons.
In 1975, I came to Beloved Adi Da Samraj as a young man, not
knowing what I would be doing as an "adult", and not really feeling
capable of working in the world and fulfilling the American dream.
I could very clearly relate to the internal dilemma Adi Da spoke
of, and felt in that state of dilemma chronically. The only relief
I felt was from drugs and alcohol.
I became a student,
and Adi Da's requirements in this area were very clear: either work
fulltime or go to school fulltime. Because I didn't really have
any marketable skills and because I could collect social security
and veterans payments from my father who had died, I decided to
go to college and learn electronics. I figured I could find lots
of work in this field.
I got my AA degree
in electronics and over time worked as a technician for Raytheon,
Ford Aerospace, TRW, and other companies. I learned some useful
skills in calibrating and repairing test equipment. I specifically
tried to get jobs with test equipment, with my goal being to land
a job at Hewlett-Packard in Santa Rosa, which would get me as close
as I thought possible to The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary in
Lake County, working in electronics.
After working
in the industry in Silicon Valley for several years, I decided to
venture out on my own, and go into business myself, repairing and
calibrating test equipment for companies in the Silicon Valley area.
The business did well and after a few years I started selling used
test equipment to some of these companies. All during this time,
I was a devotee of Beloved Adi Da living in the Palo Alto area where
several other devotees lived, but I wasn't really living in a cooperative
community situation there. Most of that time I lived in an apartment
with one or two other devotees or sometimes by myself.
The
business did well, especially the buying and selling aspect of the
business. After a few years the business became primarily a buying
and selling of used test equipment business. I was selling it and
shipping it all over the country and internationally as well. Because
I was familiar with Adi Da's Teaching, I assumed no limitations
on growth.
As a devotee, I wanted to go on retreat at Adi Da Samrajashram,
on Naitauba, in Fiji, as many of my devotee friends in Marin and Lake
County had done. I had heard wonderful stories about their retreats
in 1990. However, I did have a problem, because for the past ten years
I hadn't really been living in a cooperative community situation —
which was one of the criteria for qualifying for retreat. I
began to realize, though, since I was buying equipment from all over
the country, and since I was selling equipment all over the world,
that I actually had a mail order business that could be operated from
almost anywhere.
And so as a devotee who wanted to go on retreat
and live the Way more fully, I began considering where I could move
to while still operating my business. I realized as a devotee, the
best place to live is near an Empowered Sanctuary, so I split up the
business with my partner in Silicon Valley and moved to Lake County,
near the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary.
I started a new business called Naptech (a
name Adi Da gave me for the business), buying and selling test equipment
from Lake County. The business did very well, and doubled in sales
every year for about the first five years. I had to move the business
three times because we kept running out of space. It is 2006 now,
we continue to be an active business in this field, well known for integrity
and quality, with 25 employees. I always give as much excess
as I can to Adidam and try to hire devotees as much as possible.
Since I first heard about Adi Da Samraj, my
first goal was to be His devotee, as I knew He was all about
Truth, Happiness, and Real God. My next goal was to live as close
to the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary as possible —
although I never thought I'd get closer than Santa Rosa. As it turns
out, I now have a great income and business in a low cost area, and
I live just up the street from the Empowered Sanctuary at The Mountain
Of Attention! I owe all my good fortune to my Guru Adi Da, and to
following His direction as much as possible.
I've also noticed how the
giving of excess is a sacred relationship with Adi Da and God, and
I attribute all the success and growth we've had in the business to
my relationship with Adi Da. I really don't think I could deal with
all the problems and difficulties I have had to encounter and work
with in growing the business all these years without the helping "arms"
my relationship with Adi Da has given me.
