On July 21 and 22, 2014, The Florence Dance Company performed the multimedia dance event, Quattro Maggiore ("Four Seasons") — set to the music of Vivaldi (his most well-known work, "Quattro Maggiore", performed live) and the art of Adi Da Samraj. The venue was the courtyard of the historic Bargello Museum in Florence.

This video clip provides an introduction to the place (Florence), the dancers, the musicians, the art (images from Adi Da's Geome One: Alberti's Window, in four different colorings for the four seasons), and the costumes (which were color-coordinated with the art).

Also in this clip: Italian art critic, Giuliano Serafini (author of Matisse e il Mediterraneo and Goya, praises the combination of music, dance, and art: "It's the best!". Serafini, Keith Ferrone (director of the Florence Dance Company), and Ruchiradama Nadikanta all note the technological advance represented by the LED lighting in the back panels, that brought out the color in Adi Da's art to a far greater degree than in previous performances (assisted by new fabrications of Adi Da's art), and enlivened the dancers' performance.

Ruchiradama Nadikanta: "Absolutely exquisite! . . . It was one symphony — of dance, and art, and music. . . Adi Da was immensely present, infusing every note and every step, as well as shining through His extraordinary Art. . . You feel [the dancers] really dancing to the Art."

Videographer: Matt Braithwaite

Special Performance: The Four Seasons at The Four Seasons. There will be a special "VIP event" at 7:30pm on July 22, 2014, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence. Opening reception at poolside (with appertif, music, and dancing). At 9:00pm, the Florence Dance Company will perform, with conductor Maestro Giuseppe Lanzetta, solo violinist Marco Lorenzini, and the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina. 10:00pm: Dinner at poolside.

On July 22, 2014, Four Seasons Hotel Firenze and the Florence Dance Company will host an event in the Gherardesca Garden (see the video below), as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Florence Dance Festival. In the biggest private garden of the city, the evening atmosphere will welcome Quattro Maggiore, a dance event inspired by the four seasons of the year, accompanied by the famous music by Antonio Vivaldi performed by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina.

The ballet reveals itself through the seasons, with the choreography of Keith Ferrone and Marga Nativo exceptionally highlighted by the paintings of artist Adi da Samraj in a show of colour and light that will surely enchant. Four Seasons Hotel Firenze is enhancing this extraordinary artistic synthesis between music, dance and painting with a poolside buffet dinner of excellent Tuscan specialities.

"Dancing on the Bridge of the World": A Special Performance at the Ponte Vecchio. There will be another special performance of Quattro Maggiore, called "Dancing on the Bridge of the World", on the evening of July 24, 2014, at the Ponte Vecchio. The Ponte Vecchio is a medieval multi-arch bridge over the Arno River in Florence, Italy. It is one of the most historic bridges in the world, and the earliest bridge at this spot is believed to have been built in Roman times.

This event is the final one of the 2014 Florence Dance Festival.

About Quattro Maggiore

by Keith Ferrone
(director, Florence Dance Company)

The idea to choreograph The Four Seasons goes back to my college days when, every Sunday morning, I and my roommates listened to thirty-three rounds of Vivaldi. I had only just started my study of dance, but even then I felt that Vivaldi's music was already tickling my fancy.

A few years ago, I met that music again, after reading a review in the New York Times of a new and bold reinterpretation directed and played by violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter for the Trondheim Ensemble. Their strikingly original version required the listener to completely re-evaluate Vivaldi's impact, not just as classical music, but as contemporary music. At that same moment, a lucky encounter with Marco Pallanti, the new president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, gave me the opportunity to set Vivaldi's "Winter" to new choreography for the "Preview Chianti Classico" event at the Stazione Leopolda in February, 2006.

More recently, Alessandro Benedetti (Secretary of the Meyer Foundation) and I were involved in a major project with the Tuscany Department of Culture, celebrating the life of the late architect, Leonardo Savioli, as seen through the eyes of his partner, artist Flora Weichmann. The opportunity to combine the privileged life of the artist with Vivaldi's The Four Seasons yielded fresh insights. We associated Spring (Concerto no.1 in E major) with the passions of youth. Summer (Concerto no. 2 in G minor) was the season of love. Autumn (Concerto no. 3 in F major) was creativity. And Winter (Concerto no. 4 in F minor), was life, reaching it fulfillment. The set was named "Spring Flora", and it went on stage for a charity event for the Meyer Hospital at the Teatro Goldoni in Florence on June 6, 2009.

Adi DaThe preview of the ballet took place in the second edition of the Mugello Dance Experience in Palazzuolo sul Senio. As the staging of the ballet was taking shape, the idea of associating the ballet with the art of the great international artist Adi Da Samraj occurred through a meeting with Richard Quinn of Da Plastique, the company with a mandate to promote the artist's work. Assisted by art critic Giuliano Serafini (who, in the past had recommended that our dance art be associated with the art of Adi Da), we selected four works from Adi Da's vast repertoire that fully resonated with this dramatic ballet.

The current title of the ballet, Quattro Maggiore, reflects a juxtaposition of plasticity and movement, visual art, and of course music. It also includes the costumes designed and made by Dagmar Lise Pedersen and Indigo Millar. The design lighting of Lucilla Baroni is incisive.

I never tire of seeing bits of this beautiful collaboration between the Florence Dance Company and the Transcendental Art of Adi Da Samraj. . . Art is and can be such a healing force for all beings.
The most remarkable thing was being down the front - the interaction between the audience, the dancers and Beloved Adi Da's Art was just like being in His Company: it was intense, passionate and incredibly warm, embracing and Happy. That feeling was Radiating from the Art to everyone there and pervading them. God, it was ECSTATIC! For such high art to be so vulnerably available in a public place was something of an experiment and plenty of us were wondering whether it would work but in fact, the very ordinary people there LOVED it. As Keith Ferrone, the director of the Florence Dance Company, said, 'It was a triumph'.
Great photos, Richard.
Such a great challenge for choreographer(s) and dancers. I can envision an eventual recording of the Four Seasons directly inspired by Adi Da's art, with dance in mind.
wonderful!
Amazing music, performance and Art, seamlessly combined!
