A celebration presentation in our section, The Annual, Sacred Cycle of Celebrations in Adidam

Une Introduction ŕ Avatar Adi Da Samraj

A video clip from Vidéos d'Adi Da in our Audio/Video Library — length: 13:37, 1392 views.

Une Introduction ŕ Avatar Adi Da Samraj[Contains French subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

"Une Introduction ŕ Avatar Adi Da Samraj" ("An introduction to Avatar Adi Da Samraj").

The Devotee Feeds the Guru, and the Guru Feeds the Devotee

A story in our section, Finding Adi Da

Chris Tong: My heart opened wide and poured out love for Adi Da. And that was the miracle: I literally felt love pouring out of my heart, reaching His Heart, and feeding Him. Then I felt His Love tangibly transmitted back to me, in a great overwhelming wave, which caused my heart to open even wider. I soon found myself totally in love, totally engaged in the most direct relationship, at once both human and spiritual, crying out to my Beloved Guru, 'Let me feed You with my devotion! May You always feel my devotion, wherever I am.'

 The Sunshine Makers

A video clip from frizz lefryd in our Audio/Video Library — length: 7:43, 8939 views.

The Sunshine MakersOne of Adi Da's favorite cartoons, "The Sunshine Makers" is a classic from the golden age of animation. Released on January 11, 1935 (an auspicious day of the year, in the sacred calendar of Adidam), the cartoon was directed by Ted Eshbaugh, the first artist/technician to figure out how to create animated cartoons in color. This restored print is the highest quality available, and is from the DVD, Toddle Tales & Rainbow Parade Cartoons.

 Pozytywne rozczarowanie

A video clip from Adi Da Video Polska in our Audio/Video Library — length: 6:00, 935 views.

Pozytywne rozczarowanie[Contains Polish subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

In "Pozytywne rozczarowanie" ("Positive Disillusionment"), a video excerpt from an Avataric Discourse, Adi Da speaks about the necessity to become disillusioned with mortal life in a positive sense. Positive disillusionment is emerging when one begins to understand and relinquish the stressful and ultimately futile search for personal survival, worldly happiness, and ultimate life fulfillment. Only then can one be drawn into recognizing, learning about, and ecstatically participating in Reality Itself, in relationship to a True Realizer.

This video clip is an excerpt from the DVD, The Relationship To The Guru Is The Constant In Life.

Kolejny fragment wczesnego dyskursu (29 lipca 1973) Adi Da Samraj:

Watching this DVD will transport viewers to a special moment in Adidam history. July 29, 1973, was the day Avatar Adi Da left Los Angeles for a Yajna (sacred journey) through India and Nepal. He returned as “Bubba Free John”, His first spontaneously revealed Teaching-Name. Thus, this was the last Discourse He gave as “Franklin Jones” (Avatar Adi Da’s birth name).

Exegesis as Means for Right Interpretation of Adi Da's Communications Over Time

From our section, FAQs about Adi Da and Adidam

Context is everything when it comes to understanding what someone means. This may be even more true than usual when the communications are of a spiritual nature. From the beginning of Adi Da's Work with devotees and the world to the end of His human lifetime, the nature of His work with devotees — and therefore, the context of His talks and writings — was constantly shifting and evolving. Without the kind of framework we are presenting here (that pins down the specific context for a talk or essay), it is all too easy to mis-interpret Adi Da's communications.

 To miejsce to nie Utopia

A video clip from Adi Da Video Polska in our Audio/Video Library — length: 10:38, 815 views.

To miejsce to nie Utopia[Contains Polish subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

To miejsce śmierci, zakończeń, cierpienia, ulotnych rozrywek, to zbyt mało. Pewnego dnia to będzie twoja śmierć. Wszyscy przeminą. Wszystko przepadnie.

"To miejsce to nie Utopia" ("This Place Is Not a Utopia") is an excerpt from an Avataric Discourse given by Adi Da Samraj on October 6, 2005, at the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary.

ADI DA: "I find people's sorrows and losses to be heartbreaking and terrible and an immense burden and I am sympathetic and bless people in their trouble. However you must understand that is the nature of this place. This is not utopia, it is not paradise. It is a place of death, endings, suffering, brief amusements. It is not enough and merely to react to your difficulties for overlong and try to make an entire life out of it is fruitless. You do have to move on beyond that reaction to any moments suffering and loss. You must know the place you’re in and live in accordance with that knowledge instead of being sympathetic with some false view of the world or self or trying to idealize some aspect of potential experience, indulging in what amounts to addictions, repetitions of experiences, in order to avoid the knowledge of what is inherent in life, as well as all the hell that is coming on earth and is here. You will not be fulfilled.”

An audio clip from DawnHorsePress in our Audio/Video Library — length: 3:27, 3096 listens.

Your Real Condition Is Prior To Waking, Dreaming, and Sleeping: Part 2An audio excerpt from the CD, Your Real Condition Is Prior To Waking, Dreaming, and Sleeping.

In this excerpt (from September 4, 2004), Adi Da Adi Da speaks to a questioner about her mother’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and the transcending of attention that becomes possible with maturing spiritual practice.

Adi Da points to the depth of existence that is always the case regardless of the changing states of awareness (waking, dreaming, and sleeping). And He Calls for ego-transcending practice (sadhana) to be engaged at this depth—so that What Is Prior to all conditional states can be Realized.

 No Doubts Whatsoever

From our section, Lawsuits, Media Circuses, and "Anti-Adi Da" Websites

Alaya Gernon: I was attracted to and felt a pull to Adi Da Samraj. He appeared in many dreams, and I read His Word avidly. But my resistance to fully turning to Him was also real. It was centered around the various allegations on negative websites, and the doubts raised in me by these allegations. Even so, my attraction to Adi Da overwhelmed my doubt and resistance. I became Adi Da's devotee in 2009. This initiated a profound process of purification, which culminated in Adi Da gifting me with His Divine State of Prior Unity. I was relieved of all my doubts, and was left with no doubts whatsoever about Who He is.

4 comments — featured:
Alaya Gernon: "In the end, all I can speak to is how The Force of Recognition of Adi Da was Greater than my entanglement in mind and doubts, and what felt like an insight that it was me superimposing my own ordinariness on Him . My Recognition was so great that any double-mindedness just went and has never returned .

It is a mystery and utterly non-understandable through mind or discussion — this is what I tried to convey in my story. Beyond all concern, I simply cannot locate doubt!

 There Is No Separate Self

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:29, 1789 views.

There Is No Separate SelfIn this discourse excerpt, Adi Da addresses the fact that the assumption of a separate self or being, is not really the case. It is, in fact, an illusion — a "lie" that rules our entire life. But based on this assumption, we assume all kinds of limitations, and struggle to get out of our suffering through the very means (our assumption that we are separate) which binds us in the first place. All that does is reinforce the illusion.

At 7:07, there is Darshan of Adi Da, continuing to 9:09.

Adi Da Samraj speaks about the action of self-contraction, which creates the sense of being a "separate self" - whereas, in Reality, no matter what arises, you are only and merely the Witness Consciousness.

This talk is from the first occasion in many years in which Avatar Adi Da spoke directly to a gathering of His devotees in California. Questions from devotees about intimate, familial, and social issues are met with Avatar Adi Da's Compassion and Humor, as well as His Liberating Wisdom.

 The Spiritual Transmission Master

From our section, FAQs about Adi Da and Adidam

If there is a single greatest point of confusion about Adidam and Avatar Adi Da, it is this: the idea and the tradition of the Spiritual Transmission Master is completely absent from contemporary culture. This article explains how Spiritual Transmission Masters transmit their Spiritual Realization to their devotees, and how devotees Realize the Master's State by duplication: the principle of 'you become what you meditate on.'

The Spiritual Process Has Always Been Lived In Difficult Times

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 10:16, 2024 views.

The Spiritual Process Has Always Been Lived In Difficult TimesThis is a video excerpt from Adi Da's classic talk, "The Bodily Location of Happiness", which He gave on November 28, 1981. This talk was originally published in the book, The Bodily Location Of Happiness. The full talk is available on DVD and on CD, and as an online transcript.

ADI DA: Life is foolishness. This is no time, in any case, to be tolerant of foolishness. The world is mad, and these are dreadful times. Things are not going to be easier in the years ahead. The spiritual process has always been lived in difficult times. Therefore, the spiritual process tolerates no fool. The spiritual process itself will spit you out. It is not an easy attainment, but a profoundly difficult affair. Even what you have listened to today has been heard by only a fraction of the human race in all of history. The opportunity to practice is extremely rare, and the fulfillment of practice is practically unknown.

In some sense you could say this life is hell. . . The nature of this hell is that we are self-possessed. We are born in un-Happiness and we do not transcend it readily. We constantly pursue Happiness through all kinds of incredibly complex means, and we never attain It. . .

If Spiritual Realizers did not turn about and Teach, this would truly be a hell instead of being like a hell. It would truly be a hell if there were no possibility of Enlightenment, if there were no Teaching, no Spiritual Masters, no sacred Way, no sacred community, no capacity for understanding or self-transcendence.

"Mit Narcyza" ("The Myth of Narcissus") is an excerpt from the film, Conscious Light.  The Unity of Humankind

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:46, 4438 views.

The Unity of HumankindExcerpt from the Avataric Discourse of August 22, 2004.

Adi Da describes how humankind is a single family, a single species in "diaspora" — dispersed across the earth as the result of migrations from a single point of origin (in Africa) thousands of years ago. Making much of superficial differences due to race, nation, religion, language, tribe, political system, etc. obscures this more fundamental, deeper reality of the unity of humankind. For the sake of everyone's survival, humankind must begin to live on the basis of its unity, and establish a global cooperative order that includes and serves everyone.

A video clip from FacingEast108 in our Audio/Video Library — length: 4:46, 6627 views.

We Just Happened to Have Musical Instruments in Our HandsThis recording of Above the Clouds was made in November 2010, during a three day, 24-hour-a-day vigil of meditation and puja on the veranda of Aham Da Asmi Sthan, Adi Da's home on the island of Naitauba. Devotee John Wubbenhorst speaks of the sacred occasion of being dropped out into the space of being 'not really there' while the Guru plays the musical instrument (and the instrument that is one's body-mind).

"Above the clouds, There Is Always The Sun — Forever Free Of Earthly Weather. By Tendency, You Are Always Looking At the local weather, and Not At The Sun Itself. That Is What egoity Is About — Always Suffering The Changes Of The local Patterning That Is the body-mind In its egoic Bondage. Instead, You Must (In every moment) Turn To Me . . . "

"Una introducción a Avatar Adi Da Samraj" ("An introduction to Avatar Adi Da Samraj").

Not-Two Is Peace: IntroductionIn His book, Not-Two Is Peace: The Ordinary People's Way of Global Cooperative Order, Adi Da speaks to the necessity of re-establishing human civilization based on principles of mutual trust, cooperation, tolerance, "prior unity", and the limitless participation of all humankind in transforming its own destiny.

 Myths, Realizers & Divine Revelation

An audio clip from DawnHorsePress in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:08, 4374 listens.

Myths, Realizers & Divine RevelationOn November 25, 2004, at Adi Da Samrajashram, one of Adi Da's devotees asks Him: "Is there any way to know . . . what is the relationship of ancient Realizers to the traditions that they were associated with?"

Avatar Adi Da responds by illustrating the process of myth-making around Realizers, both in ancient and modern times. He explains that, regardless of what is historically true of any Realizer, any tradition can be understood in terms of the underlying structure of the human being. Throughout the Discourse, Adi Da makes use of examples from numerous traditions including Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, and Christianity.

Adi Da: "Traditions do not really depend on there having been an historical individual, whether or not there was one. They can nonetheless still be understood in terms of the structure of the psycho-physical anatomy. And the psycho-physical anatomy, not mythology extending from it, but the psycho-physical anatomy itself — and this is My Instruction to you, to all — that structure itself determines what is regarded to be religious truth, or esoteric truth. Underneath it is a structure, not merely Truth. That structure must be transcended, or there is not Truth Realized."

In this excerpt, Adi Da specifically talks about the Christian tradition, and the importance of distinguishing a "faith" (or system of beliefs) from factual observations of phenomena throughout recorded history.

The full Discourse is now available on the 2-CD set, Myths, Realizers, and Divine Revelation.

 The Virtue of Positive Disillusionment

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 19:38, 2634 views.

The Virtue of Positive DisillusionmentIn this excerpt from a never-before-published discourse, Adi Da speaks about the necessity to become disillusioned with mortal life in a positive sense.

Frederick C: "This is a Depth-Full Discourse. Humans seek consolations of conventional life including via practices and holding onto limited realizations of all of the six stages of life to attempt in ordinary and grand display to obviate the reality of death. The ego has a plethora of ways to console. Even grand pronouncements of spiritual attainment, temporary experiences and achievements, status and all sorts of projections of an apparent self. I am deeply grateful for Beloved Adi Da's Teaching on Positive Disillusionment. He cuts through the illusions of the conventional views of life. He breaks the heart. He Gives Freedom. When I became homeless two years ago (a situation that has resolved now) after a life of extraordinary experiences it was this understanding of Positive Disillusionment that came to the fore. This understanding continues to deepen via His Gifts amidst seeming en masse superficialities of point of view. The Feeling Of Beloved Adi Da Gives the depth of intuition of non-separateness. He Is Grace. He Gives Utter Peace in the adversity of seemingly difficult circumstances. Even death. In adversity at depth, Bhagavan Adi Da Gives. . . hence Bhagavan Adi Da is the Primary relationship. He Is Utter Peace. He Is Love. He Shows and Is Tat Sundaram. All is Beautiful. Gracious Sat-Guru."

Magdalena H: "The morning of April 25, 2019 began with a special ceremony commemorating this celebration day. It also happens to be my spiritual 'birthday', when I was initiated formally as Adi Da’s devotee 38 years ago. Much gratitude to Avatar Adi Da Samraj for a way of life and devotional relationship that has taught me so much in so many aspects of life and love, whether those perspectives have been religious, secular, agnostic, or even atheistic."

 The Grace of Suffering

A video clip from CDBaby in our Audio/Video Library — length: 12:21, 5553 views.

The Grace of SufferingAn excerpt from the talk, "The Grace of Suffering", given by Adi Da on January 18, 1976.

This excerpt is track 1 of the CD, The Impulse to God-Realization, a collection of talks focusing on Adi Da's clarifying Wisdom on the Impulse to Realize God that is inherent in all beings, and His Divine Offering and Instruction on the Ultimate Means to cultivate this heart-Impulse, thereby allowing it to become the guiding force of one's entire life.

The album is available through iTunes and The Dawn Horse Press.

This selection of Talks by Avatar Adi Da Samraj focuses on His clarifying Wisdom on the Impulse (inherent in all beings) to Realize God, and His Divine Offering and Instruction on the Ultimate Means to cultivate this heart-Impulse, thereby allowing it be the guiding force of one's entire life. As Avatar Adi Da points out, the real Spiritual Process cannot be truly initiated until and unless one’s Impulse to God-Realization becomes the governing principle of one's life.

The full talk, "The Grace of Suffering", is available on the CD, The Grace of Suffering, and on DVD as Volume 2 of the 25th Anniversary DVD Series.

"The Grace of Suffering" is a beautiful talk by Adi Da. But it IS very compressed, making quite a few points in a short space, and depending to a significant degree on a familiarity with Adi Da's spiritual teaching. Here are some notes that may help.

Throughout the talk, the technical term, "sadhana" (spiritual practice), is used.

Genuine spiritual practice is not about belief systems, mere rituals, or a little "peace of mind", but rather about actually locating the Divine, through the tangible Transmission of the Spiritual Master.

After a recent illness, a devotee mentions to Adi Da that he notices how the physical suffering of illness was distracting enough that he was not "able" to find Adi Da's Transmission when he is ill.

Adi Da acknowledges this, and responds with three more general points.

1. The illness didn't "make" the devotee lose the thread of practice; rather, he allowed himself to be distracted from God by the illness. When the devotee gets this, and sees how he himself is "doing" the turning away, he'll be able to "do better next time" by not turning away even when ill.

2. Until Divine Enlightenment — in other words, until there is no limit on one's spiritual practice — sadhana (spiritual practice) is always only reflecting back to devotees the remaining limits in their practice: where they are still turning away from the Divine, where they still need to become responsible for not turning away.

In the beginning, the "turning away" is very "crude": even mere physical suffering is enough to distract one from God. (If we find ourselves saying, "what do you mean, MERE physical suffering?" that definitely identifies us as spiritual beginners! :-) ) But as one grows in practice, and ceases to turn away in such a crude manner (as one becomes a "saint", "yogi", "sage", etc.), one discovers that one is still turning from the Divine at an even subtler level of the being (in the mind, the psyche, etc.)

It is only when that "turning away" has been inspected, understood, and transcended in every dimension of the being that Divine Realization occurs.

In this sense, for the genuine spiritual practitioner, physical suffering — along with every other circumstance that reveals to us our turning away from the Divine — is truly a Grace, enabling us to grow in our practice.

3. Where we are turning away is a reflection of what we are identifying with: the body, the mind, the soul, etc. (For example, if physical illness is enough to distract us from God, then the physical body is what we currently are identified with.) God-Realization only occurs when all "identities" less than God are understood and transcended.

In this sense, "there are no winners in God" — the Way is not about seeking, accomplishment, or winning, but rather about surrender to God, sacrifice of self, and ego-death. There's no "one" left to "win"! But the One Who Remains is perfectly, eternally happy.

Jonathan Condit był starszym asystentem redakcyjnym Adi Da. Mówi o "funkcji literatury duchowej Adi Da Samraj ", a następnie Adi Da opisuje proces Jego nauczania jako duchowy przekaz Jego osoby. W kolejnym fragmencie nagrania jeden z uczniów Adi Da wspomina jak sam doświadczył duchowego przekazu swojego Mistrza.

This video clip, "Nauczanie Adi Da Samraj jako Jego duchowy przekaz" ("Adi Da's Teaching as Transmission") includes:

  • Commentary from Jonathan Condit (at 0:00)Jonathan Condit was Adi Da's senior editorial assistant, and is Senior Editor for the Adidam Editorial Department. Jonathan talks about "The Function of the Spiritual Literature of Adi Da Samraj", and how Adi Da's Teaching works as Transmission of His Transcendental Spiritual State, and serves the Spiritual Realization of the reader.

  • Excerpt from an Avataric Discourse by Adi Da (at 5:35) — The Discourse is "My Teaching is a Direct Transmission of Me", from October 28, 2005. Adi Da talks about how His Teaching Word is a form of Spiritual Transmission, that enables Divine Communion with Him (if the devotee is in the right devotional disposition), in the same way that a Murti photograph does, or any of the other forms of Agency that Adi Da has created for this purpose.

  • Commentary from Megan Anderson (at 12:44)Megan Anderson is an editor in the Adidam Editorial Department. Megan talks about Adi Da's great, final masterpiece, The Aletheon as the purest communication and Transmission of Adi Da Himself (among all His many, extraordinary books), and describes receiving the Revelation of Adi Da as she was proofreading The Aletheon before its publication.

Adi Da: "My Reality-Teaching is unparalleled Spiritual Transmission, occurring under the most extraordinary circumstances. It is not the product of an ordinary mind or a kind of scholarly commentary. It is a direct expression of Spiritual Transformation, of Spiritual Power, of Transcendental, Inherently Spiritual, and (necessarily) Divine Being, Consciousness, and Love-Bliss. It does not arise in Me or through Me in any ordinary fashion. It is an utterly spontaneous and Transcendental Spiritual Event."

 Wolność jest jedynym prawem

Wolność jest jedynym prawem[Contains Polish subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

Jestem tu, by wyzwolić wszystkie istoty.

Darshan occasion of Avatar Adi Da at Adi Da Samrajashram.

The audio recording is an excerpt from a recitation of Adi Da's essay, "Freedom Is The Only Law and Happiness Is The Only Reality". This is the Epilogue from Adi Da's book, The Truly Human New World-Culture of Unbroken Real-God-Man, which was originally written in 2001, and updated on November 13, 2019. The essay is read by a student of Adi Da.

ADI DA: Jestem tu, by wyzwolić wszystkie istoty.

Jestem tu po to, by każdemu dać prawdziwą wolność.

ADI DA: I Am here to Divinely Liberate all beings.

I Am here to Grant True Freedom to every one.

“Freedom” is one of the principal words associated with the politics of this “late-time”. The general trend toward the democratization of the entire world carries with it an intensified interest in the concept of freedom and in the pursuit of freedom. However, in the context and circumstance of this “late-time”, the word “freedom” is used in such a way that the true import of the word is lost, and its meaning is transformed, and even vulgarized.

The same process of vulgarization has also occurred in the case of other words, such as (for example) the word “love”. The word “love” represents a profound concept and reality, but the word itself tends to be used very casually. People commonly say that they “love” this or that, meaning something quite different from what the word “love” rightly and truly signifies.

“Love” is a word that rightly refers to the universal Sacrifice of ego-“self”. Real love is a matter of transcending “self” (or going beyond your limitations in relation to others)—but, in the “late-time” circumstance of vulgarized culture, the word “love” has come to be used in relation to whatever satisfies your inclinations, or fulfills your desires, or (otherwise) somehow compensates for limitations in your life by pleasing you and (thereby) supporting your egoic disposition. None of that has anything to do with real love.

So it also is with the word “freedom”, and the notion of freedom. The world-culture of this “late-time” is essentially an ego-culture associated with complications in the first three stages of life. It is essentially an adolescent culture. And it is in the context of that culture that great words like “love” and “freedom” become vulgarized. In the adolescent disposition, the word “freedom”, like the word “love”, is reduced to an egoic meaning. People say they want to be “free”, or want to act “freely”, or want to be “free” to do this or that—but what they actually mean is that they want to be able to fulfill their desires without limitation. An adolescent reacting to parental authority or parental expectations regards any such authority or expectations to be oppressive or limiting. Therefore, such adolescents say that they want to be “free” to do whatever they please. And that is, in general, what is meant in this “late-time” by the word “freedom”. Even in the larger political sphere, the word “freedom” is used to express the (personal, and also collective) intent to be able to fulfill desires—and those desires are (necessarily) fundamentally ego-based.

What does the fulfillment of desires have to do with true freedom? Rightly, the word “freedom” is synonymous with the word “liberation”. To “be free”, or to “be liberated”, means to “go beyond bondage”. The opposite of “freedom” is “bondage”. If one is truly moved to be truly free, one is moved to relinquish (and go beyond) bondage. Such is the true Wisdom-understanding of freedom.

Neither true freedom, nor real love, nor any other great concept is rightly understood via the words and concepts of adolescents. There must be human maturity (and, therefore, growth in Wisdom) for the great meanings underlying these concepts to be understood and actually lived.

Be moved toward real love, without limit. Be moved toward real happiness, without limit.

Be moved toward true freedom, without limit. You should (and, ultimately, must) be so moved. But to actually realize love (or real happiness, or true freedom) without limit, you must deal with yourself most profoundly. You cannot merely be reactive, like an adolescent or a worldly person.

If you want to be truly free, you must first understand that you are bound, and you must understand how you are bound, and then you must do something about that. If, on the other hand, you are merely reactively inclined to fulfill desires, and you want to be (so-called) “free” to do so, then you are not examining your bondage—what its roots are, what its signs are, what its characteristics are—and, if you are not examining your bondage with real discriminative intelligence, you are also not doing what you must do in order to be truly free.

 The Heart of Understanding

A video clip from Wisdom Tools for Humanity in our Audio/Video Library — length: 2:47, 3131 views.

The Heart of UnderstandingAdi Da recites "The Heart of Understanding", the Prologue to His autobiography, The Knee Of Listening. "The Heart of Understanding" also is the Prologue to His book, Easy Death.

The recitation is accompanied by photos of Adi Da.

"The Heart of Understanding" is extraordinarily good news: death itself can be transcended! The death of the body-mind is not a problem, and is utterly acceptable, if one realizes and stands as Consciousness Itself, in which all mortal forms and limited worlds are arising.

In the final words of "The Heart of Understanding", Adi Da reveals that He is That: Consciousness Itself. Because this is so, He transmits that Revelation to all beings, and provides (and is) the means whereby all of us finally can be free of mortality and the mortal vision.

This excerpt is track 1 of the CD, Death and the Purpose of Existence, a collection of talks and recitations that exemplify Avatar Adi Da’s essential Wisdom-Teaching on death and dying.

The album is available through iTunes, Microsoft, and The Dawn Horse Press.

All the great Spiritual Masters have been not only teachers, but Transmission Masters: they literally transmit their Spiritual Realization to their devotees, communicating a state that is happier than the usual worldly destiny. The greatest of all Spiritual Masters are the Divine Incarnations, who transmit the greatest Realization of all — the Divine State of Perfect and Eternal Happiness. In this article, we make the case that Avatar Adi Da Samraj is just such a rare Divine Incarnation.

Stanley Hastings talks about his childhood and adolescence growing up in the Adidam community. Like many other young people, as a teenager, he decided to see for himself what the world had to offer. After several years of experimenting, he decided to return to Adi Da and the Way of life He offered — to fully participate again in the life of the community and to serve Adi Da directly.

Dancing on the Bridge of the World

A video clip from Matt Braithwaite in our Audio/Video Library — length: 14:19, 5379 views.

Dancing on the Bridge of the WorldOn the evening of July 24, 2014, The Florence Dance Company performed the multimedia dance event, Quattro Maggiore ("Four Seasons") — set to the music of Vivaldi (his most well-known work, "Quattro Maggiore", performed live) and the art of Adi Da Samraj. The performance was called "Dancing on the Bridge of the World", because it took place on the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval multi-arch bridge over the Arno River in Florence, Italy. The Ponte Vecchio is one of the most historic bridges in the world, and the earliest bridge at this spot is believed to have been built in Roman times.

The video shows devotees preparing and transporting Adi Da's Image-Art to the Ponte Vecchio, followed by clips of the performance itself. The video also includes after-performance interviews with devotees Hanneke Vlaar (patron of the European Danda's Bright Room Gallery, the world's largest standing collection of Adi Da's Image-Art), Matt Braithwaite, and Ruchiradama Nadikanta.

Videographer: Matt Braithwaite

Death Is Not the End of Anything

A video clip from CDBaby in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:14, 3843 views.

Death Is Not the End of AnythingThis is an excerpt from Adi Da's talk, "Death Is Not The End Of Anything", on January 14, 1995 at Adi Da Samrasjashram. This talk appears as a chapter in Adi Da's book, Easy Death.

Adi Da: "You cannot get in touch with Reality Itself (or Truth Itself) without dying — in the sense of relinquishing the egoic self. Most people think they will do that at the end of the physical lifetime. They do not deal with Reality (or Truth) in life, yet they imagine they will deal with It at death. They will not — if they have not dealt with It while alive. They will not want Reality (or Truth) in death any more than they wanted it while they lived. To Realize Reality Itself, 'you', the ego, must die — because 'you' is a knot, a gesture, an act of separating from Reality. What is called 'you' is an action of dissociation from Reality. I call it 'the ego', 'the self-contraction'. It avoids Reality."

Adi Da as First, Last, and Only Seventh Stage Adept

From our section, Spiritual Recognition of Adi Da

Shortly after His Re-Awakening in September, 1970, Adi Da began a decades-long consideration (concluded finally in 1993) about whether there had been any other seventh stage Realizers among all the great Spiritual Masters throughout history. In this article, we lay out Adi Da's search for a historical precedent. This consideration would first lead Him to a greatly clarified set of criteria for assessing whether the teaching and life story of a great Realizer or Master indicated that they were in the seventh stage of life. Ultimately, it led Him to conclude that He was in fact the first such Realizer; and further, that He was the first, last, and only seventh stage Adept.

Suffering Is Not Anything That Is Happening To You

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 4:45, 3953 views.

Suffering Is Not Anything That Is Happening To YouExcerpt from a talk given by Adi Da on June 18, 1976, at The Mountain Of Attention.

Adi Da describes how, through the Grace of His Company, the devotee becomes increasingly aware of suffering and its nature. Increasingly, Grace reveals that suffering is the result of the devotee's own activity.

Consequently, the Way of Adidam [called "The Way of Divine Communion" in this 1976 talk] involves a life of counter-egoic activity, that focuses on devotion to the Divine Presence of the Guru, rather than working on one's tendencies. Over time, the act of devotional surrender to the Divine (and the Happiness associated with that surrender) replaces the act of self-possession (and the suffering associated with that self-possession).

 Cos'č il Dubbio?

A video clip from Video di Adi Da, Canale italiano in our Audio/Video Library — length: 13:25, 568 views.

Cos'č il Dubbio?[Contains Italian subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

In 1986, Adi Da made His first visit to the European community of His devotees. He travelled through England, France and Holland. In the South of Holland, in the village of Maria Hoop close to the German border, a former Catholic monastery was found which could be rented for a few weeks. Devotees swiftly cleaned buildings and the grounds. Adi Da stayed in a specially prepared wing of the monastery for several days. During this time, He granted Darshan and held "Question and Answer" occasions in the chapel (now called Adi Da Kapel) with German, English, Dutch, French and American devotees. The former monastery has since been acquired by the European community of Adidam and is now known as The European Danda.

In "Cos'č il Dubbio?" ("What Is Doubt?"), a rare excerpt from one of the "Question and Answer" occasions, Adi Da addresses the primal human emotion of doubt in a most direct and simple manner. He describes how doubt is not ultimately a sign that we have been "betrayed" in some way. The radical solution to doubt is to identify with the Divine Itself, beyond the temporary cycles of the body and mind and beyond the sense of being a separate self.

El Corazón del Entendimiento[Contains Spanish subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

Adi Da recites "El Corazón del Entendimiento" ("The Heart of Understanding"), the Prologue to His autobiography, The Knee Of Listening.

At the Feet of the Malibu Surfer-Dude

A story in our section, Finding Adi Da

Jan Myer: In the midst of my search, at the bookstore I frequented in those days, I saw (for the first time) the too-happy, too-youthful face of what appeared to be a kind of 'Malibu surfer-dude', on the cover of a book I'd never seen before, titled The Knee Of Listening. The man looked too cool by half, and I was a little offended by the book's subtitle, 'The Early Life And Radical Spiritual Teachings' of 'Franklin Jones'! I chuckled to myself, thinking, 'Just about anybody can claim to be Enlightened these days!'

How could such distinctions continue in the consciousness of one who has Realized the Divine?

If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

"Czy nauczyłeś się czuć doskonale?" ("Have you learned to feel perfectly?") is an excerpt from the longer talk, "The Fire Must Have Its Way". The full talk is available on the DVD, The Fire Must Have Its Way. It is also available as a CD. The talk also appears in written form in the book, My "Bright" Sight and online here.

The bottom line: If you want to feel good, you have to learn how to feel good!

ADI DA: Somehow in the midst of this round of existence you realize that you can feel a lot better than you now feel, that you can feel absolutely blissful, that you can love absolutely, that you can be absolutely free. But feeling blissful stands in contrast to your common state. You are addicted to reactive emotion, low levels of energy, gross fixations of attention, psycho-physical obstruction. You are addicted to countless programs that are less than love. In every moment your attention is moving toward one or another object, and your feeling in every moment is an expression of the program of mind into which you are locked in that moment.

Now, what have you learned in your whole life? Have you learned to feel perfectly? To feel absolutely? Did you ever go through a period of study in which you learned to feel to Infinity, to feel Absolute Divinity? No, you learned all the reactive patterns of life, all the desires for ordinary things. You knew them even before you became familiar with them again in this body. You cannot feel any better than you can feel, and you are addicted to feeling less than love, to being less than ecstasy. When you come to see Me, you will realize that you cannot feel any better than you can feel.

Sacred Sighting of Avatar Adi Da from His Last Visit to CaliforniaADI DA: "I am your Real State, Real Condition speaking to you, being present with you through a form like your own. That is the mystery of the Spiritual Master. I'm not really suggesting all this is so or think it's logically so or communicating it to you as a metaphor. I am this. This is My Realization. This is My State. I am telling this to you because it is also your state.

I am here in this form to make this communication to you and this Transmission to you so that you will realize that state. The Transmission of Spirit Blessing is the Transmission of Light. What you taste is Light, what you smell is Light, what you hear is Light, what you see is Light what you feel is Light what you sense altogether is Light. The body is Light. What is Light then? It is nothing but the self-radiant bliss of the Divine Self.”

Many of the melodies are familiar to friends and devotees of Adi Da Samraj, and all were offered in His Company on numerous occasions over the last thirty or more years. In this unique album, Naamleela spontaneously brings to life the devotion in these chants, subtly reinterpreting them as beautiful piano pieces filled with love and profound heart feeling.

 The Avon Lady, excerpt 1

An audio clip from AdidamRevelationMagazine in our Audio/Video Library — length: 5:35, 6962 listens.

The Avon Lady, excerpt 1"The Avon Lady" is a classic talk given by Avatar Adi Da in the early years of His Teaching-Work. In this humorous and penetrating discourse, Avatar Adi Da offers basic instruction regarding the nature of seeking and the Awakening Function of the True Guru.

In this audio excerpt entitled “There Is Already No Dilemma”, Avatar Adi Da describes the human egoic drama of separation, suffering, and seeking. All pleasures, distractions, and experiences reinforce that same drama of the apparently separate self. But the True Guru does not support the search, does not promise any fulfillment of that search. That is the uniqueness and the invaluable quality of the True Guru. Adi Da compares the True Guru to an unusual elevator – where one steps in, expecting to go up (toward Spiritual attainment or some other fulfillment), but instead the bottom drops out. This is why the search begins to fall apart once there is recognition of the True Guru. Then the real Spiritual process can begin.

 What Is Doubt?

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 13:25, 3503 views.

What Is Doubt?

In this rare, never before published excerpt from one of the "Question and Answer" occasions, Adi Da addresses the primal human emotion of doubt in a most direct and simple manner. He describes how doubt is not ultimately a sign that we have been "betrayed" in some way. The radical solution to doubt is to identify with the Divine Itself, beyond the temporary cycles of the body and mind and beyond the sense of being a separate self.

The Fruitful Question Is Not Did He or Didn't He But Rather Is He or Isn't He

From our section, Crazy Wisdom and "The Way That I Teach"

Spiritual seekers exploring the possibility of becoming a devotee of Adi Da often encounter an obstacle course in the form of websites that accuse Adi Da of having done various things they consider innappropriate, that lampoon His manner of speaking and writing, etc. They then come to us with questions of the form, Did He or didn't He? While we do address a lot of these questions (some on this site), what I'd like to recommend (as more productive) is that such seekers focus on a different consideration, which resonates better with the possibility of receiving Adi Da's Revelation, which will make all your questions besides the point. I'll call it the Is He or Isn't He? consideration.

 The Master Is The Means

An audio clip from AdidamRevelationMagazine in our Audio/Video Library — length: 10:37, 4405 listens.

The Master Is The MeansThe CD, The Master Is The Means, is a compilation of talks in which Avatar Adi Da describes the spontaneous heart-response to the Spiritual Master as the great, effective, and anciently known Means of Spiritual Awakening.

By exposing the true nature of ego, and pointing out our false and limiting presumptions about Spiritual Masters, Avatar Adi Da enables a free consideration of what is truly needed to Realize the Truth of our Condition. He provides a traditional context for the purpose of His human Form here, while also communicating the utterly unique appearance and offering He Is.

This audio excerpt, "Divine Realization Is a Gift", is from October 12, 2004. Here Avatar Adi Da states clearly that the Divine must be Self-Revealed by Grace. No method, no technique, no form of seeking of any kind is the means to Realize the Divine. All such seeking is simply evidence of contraction upon the separate "self" — which is the continuous, unsurrendered gesture of ego.

The essence of Adidam is, instead, living in the present Company of the Divine, turning whole bodily to that Divine Reality Appearing as Avatar Adi Da — and through that turning, being moved by Grace to His Perfect State of Divine Reality and Truth.

Scientology and The Knee Of Listening

From our section, FAQs about Adi Da and Adidam

Q: Why did Adi Da remove the references to Scientology in His autobiography, The Knee Of Listening? A: For editorial reasons: it was redundant with earlier chapters in the book.

Michael L: "I consider Bhagavan Adi Da's time in Scientology to be in the same category as His time on Christian religious pilgrimage after the Mother Shakti Goddess as the Virgin Mary appeared to Him in the garden of Mukhtananda's ashram and told Him to buy a rosary. If you read the pages about this episode in the most recent edition of THE KNEE OF LISTENING, you will see what is apparently a thorough-going Christian who even writes approvingly about the Roman Catholic Holy Mother Church. This episode. . . [cont.]"

Nie jesteś w stanie spełnić wszystkich oczekiwań

Nie jesteś w stanie spełnić wszystkich oczekiwań[Contains Polish subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

"Nie jesteś w stanie spełnić wszystkich oczekiwań" ("You Cannot Satisfy Everyone's Expectations") is a video excerpt from an Avataric Discourse given by Adi Da Samraj on July 7, 2005, in Land Bridge Pavilion at The Mountain Of Attention.

In this excerpt, Adi Da responds to a devotee from India who asks for Adi Da's guidance on how to reconcile his traditional family obligations with his impulse to serve His Spiritual Master.

This talk is from the first occasion in many years in which Avatar Adi Da spoke directly to a gathering of His devotees in California. Questions from devotees about intimate, familial, and social issues are met with Avatar Adi Da's Compassion and Humor, as well as His Liberating Wisdom.

The complete Avataric Discourse is available on the DVD, Relinquish the Mummery of This World.

 The Present-Day Priesthood, Part 2

A video clip from CDBaby in our Audio/Video Library — length: 14:18, 1211 views.

The Present-Day Priesthood, Part 2This is an excerpt from an Avataric Discourse given by Adi Da on August 22, 2004 at Adi Da Samrajashram.

This excerpt is disc one, track 3 of the double-CD, Science Is A Method, Not A Philosophy, in which Avatar Adi Da unravels present-day scientific presumptions, with great humor and penetrating insight. Adi Da reveals how scientific materialism has replaced the sacred orientation in life and indoctrinated humankind into limited belief systems, discussing common views about evolution, astronomy versus astrology, ancient religions, the expanding universe, the "language" of mathematics and shape, and more. In addition, He masterfully describes how knowledge is an effort to achieve power over nature, based on the fundamental illusion that there is such a thing as an independent (or "objective") "point of view". In this process, Avatar Adi Da calls His listeners to be free of all false authorities, and to consider the Way that perfectly transcends "point of view" itself.

The album is available through iTunes and The Dawn Horse Press.

 Limitation on Love

A video clip from TheBeezone in our Audio/Video Library — length: 2:17, 2541 views.

Limitation on LoveAdi Da talking to devotees in New Zealand in 1988.

He responds to a devotee who is wanting to go beyond his "limitation on love". Adi Da makes the point that this is not possible merely via idealism and will. One's current limit on love is due to an as yet uninspected resistance to love. Only through self-understanding (and disciplines that serve self-understanding) can one transcend this limit.

A video clip from PaulineChew in our Audio/Video Library — length: 8:03, 3874 views.

43Track 5 from Pauline Chew's album, Songs For Baba Da. . . And The World.

Words are from poem 43 in Adi Da's book of poetry, Crazy Da Must Sing.

My loved one sits upon my knee.
My left hand is on her head.
My right hand guides
her listening to my Heart.
My touching awakens her need,
her love for me,
and makes her know me while I speak.

My loved one lies with me.
Our loving appears as every form
of all the worlds.
Our sounds together
make all sounds.
We are the thing that is seen and heard.
We are the rhythmed mind of everything.

Troubles arise for one
who does not know the act
in which he lives.
Therefore, I display the image
of my loved one and me.
One who does not understand
gains power for his lust in holy places.
But one who understands
becomes the lovers’ act that is.
